  • 4th April 2026 seen by Nigel Driver (via WhatsApp) – Osprey

WeirWood all morning, where it was breezy and overcast, however the birds were good with Yellow Wagtail over the fishing lodge, seen later on the dam and my first Osprey this year flew north over the dam at 10:25hrs. There were also 12 or so Sand Martins, amongst which was my first Barn Swallow of the year they all disappeared after about half an hour at 10:00hrs. The only gulls were a couple of Herring and 2 Lesser Black-backed, 4 Great-crested Grebes were noted but little else of note on the water. In the c/pk Chiffchaffs and 2 Blackcap, Goldcrest and Marsh Tit. There was an obvious feeling of migration today with other species inc’ 2 Sky Lark, 2 Redwing and a small number of Chaffinches all headed north. I noted very little at the west end today, Kingfisher being the highlight. I left at 11:10hrs well pleased.

WeirWood on a bright dawn at the dam, here lots of Chiffchaffs and 2 Blackcaps noted in and around the c/pk area and 2 Coal Tits. On the water 4 Great-crested Grebes and an ad’ Herring Gull whilst on the dam a pair of Grey Wagtails. Overhead a Raven flew east and an early morning Red Kite flew along the north bank. At the west end later a Great and 2 Little Egrets, a Kingfisher flew across and entered on of the nest holes opposite the c/pk, 3 Gadwall were present and the male Goshawk was over Admirals wood briefly seen to be chasing something. The feeders were busy as usual inc’ 2 Marsh Tits. From the lay-by the Wood Lark was heard singing but remained unseen. At Whillett’s 2 Reed Buntings and 2 Greenfinches were noted. Along the north bank another Marsh Tit, Mistle Thrush, male Green Woodpecker, a pair of Nuthatches, Treecreeper and a Tawny Owl unfortunately flushed from some bushes. Overhead 2 Buzzards and a male Kestrel. I left at 9:50, a more productive visit than in recent days.

Warmer this afternoon at the dam, but little moving apart from a Marsh Harrier which was high and slowly circling SSW. It was joined by a Red Kite high over mid reservoir.
Goshawk ( male) was displaying over south bank, and just caught a Peregrine as it was disappearing over the trees after it had flown across the reservoir going south, small so probably a male.
Other bits,2 Great black backed Gulls on the water,a Lesser black back flew north and at least 14 GCG.

  • Work Party – March 2026

All West End: March is our time for managing all the nest boxes and we have well over a 100 that need cleaning and maintenance, renewals etc and then monitoring. We also carry out Refugia tin surveys regularly.

Whillet’s Meadows: (C8 to C11) We had several bonfires to clear from previous work when we were managing Blackthorn & Willow overgrowth and fallen trees within the meadows. We also repaired the anti-slip wire mesh on the two access bridges for safety reasons.

Later month we cleared several unwanted and part fallen Willow trees now growing along the ground from the river line and these were cut and stacked ready for future disposal. We also cleared some access paths and started our breeding bird surveys (BBS).

We planted some native Snakeshead Fritillary bulbs and purchased materials and built a protective cage to protect them from grazing damage by Fallow Deer which are proving to be a problem to our plantlife within the meadows.

In C13: Opposite the Car Pak we built a Sand Martin bank of 11 nest holes to a recommended RSPB design. A video by the RSPB is available on our website showing the construction and giving other info.

More Work Party news is also included in our members Quarterly newsletter.

Study Area: (C2 to C4) Further bonfires and some hazel coppicing was carried out in our Study area C2 to C4 where we also repaired a feed pipe leak at our pondlet.

We cut back some vegetation on C1 Pintail bank to allow better access for our grazing wildfowl and carried out some fence repairs.

Legsheath lane: (C6) We cut and cleared fallen trees that were lying on the reserves boundary fence or infringing the road area.

Hide car park: (C5) We dug out and cleared the Car Park drainage ditches to help reduce the car park flooding and mud problems. We also repaired a broken bench seat at one of the seating areas.

In C18 & C19 The North Bank public footpath – Lecomber seat view area – We cut and cleared internal access paths to allow us to do survey work & monitor these compartments. At the view area we started to clear Willow from the water edge to maintain open views from the public footpath seat view point and encourage more marsh habitat at the water edge.  Pics before and after at view point
