    Whillet’s:- Reed Bunting, Kingfisher, Buzzard and several Whitethroats. Slow Worm,
    Butterflies:- 32 Meadow Brown, 54 Ringlets, 41 Small Skipper, 2 Large Skipper, 1 Essex Skipper, 3 Gatekeeper, 1 Marbled White, 1 Large White, 3 Small White, 2 Green Veined White, 2 Red Admiral, 1 Comma, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Six Spot Burnet moth.
    1 Brilliant Emerald on river,1 Brown Hawker,1 Broad-bodied Chaser,7 Common Darter,10 Blue Tail Damselfly,8 White-legged Damselfly.
    1 each of Tawny Longhorn Beetle and Yellow & Black Longhorn Beetle.

    Dam End:- 2 Common Scoter which flew N, Great and Little Egret, 3 Common Sandpipers.

    West End:- 2 Common Terns sat (newest raft and closer left raft) and 2 others with them, 2 obvious Great Crested Grebe nests with sitting birds and around 20 other adults nearby, 6 Mandarin, Moorhen, Mallard and in addition to normal Greylags a tight group of 13 white ones near opposite shore, 3 Mute Swans at Pintail Point, Blackcap and Reed Bunting singing to left of hide.

    Dam End:- Adult female Goshawk flew across reservoir being chased by Gulls, 1 Common Sandpiper, 4 Common Terns, 79 Black-headed Gulls + 4 juveniles, 2 adult Egyptian Geese with 8 goslings still.

    Whillet’s:- 1 Kingfisher.
    1 Southern Hawker,1 Brown Hawker,1 Banded Demoiselle,9 White-legged Damselfly,3 Blue Tail Damselfly.
    Butterflies – 24 Small Skippers, 8 Large Skippers, 3 Small White, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Comma, 47 Meadow Brown, 45 Ringlets.
    9 Grass Snakes, pregnant Lizard, mating pair of Tawny Longhorn Beetles.

    Whillet’s:-  Dragonflies: 2 Brilliant Emerald Dragonflies at Meadow Pond –  The last and only other sighting of this species at Weir Wood was 10 years ago.  Also seen were 1 Emperor Dragonfly, 1 Beautiful and 1 Banded Demoiselle, 30 Azure, 4 Blue-tailed and 1 White-legged Damselflies.
    Butterflies: 30 Meadow Brown, 25 Ringlet, 9 Small Skipper, 4 Large Skipper, 1 Gatekeeper, 1 Small and 1 Large White, 1 Comma. Plus 1 Cinnabar Moth.
    Birds: 1 Yellowhammer, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Reed Bunting. Reed Warbler and Chiffchaff heard, 1 Whitethroat.
    West End:-  3 Mute Swan, 2m Tufted Duck, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 2 Kingfishers, 9 Common Terns, 1 Buzzard. 1 probable Pipistrelle bat in a bat roost boxes. 1 Small Magpie and 1 Bloodvein moth in study area.

    Dam End:- 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Little Egret, 5 Mandarin, 2 Egyptian Geese, 1 Mute Swan, 30 Greylag Geese, 18 Canada Geese, 13 Mallard, 2 Swift, 3 Swallow, 4 House Martin, 1 Hobby, 4 Common Tern, 30 Black-headed Gull, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Green Woodpecker (adult male + fledged juv).
    West End:- 9 Common Tern, 2 Moorhen.
    Whillet’s:- 2 Kingfisher, several Reed Warblers including fledged young being fed.
    Dragonflies – 1 Downy Emerald on river, 2 male Black-tailed Skimmer, 1 Common Darter, 6 White-legged Damselfly, 6 Blue Tail Damselfly.
    Loads of small Froglets & Toadlets emerging from Whillet’s pool.
    Roesel’s Bush Crickets & Common Grasshoppers. Black & Yellow Long Horn Beetle.
    Butterflies:- 13 Small Skipper, 10 Large Skipper, 1 Common Blue, 2 Red Admiral, 22 Ringlet, 49 Meadow Brown.

    Red-belted Clearwing Moth first record for our site. It is nationally scarce ‘B’.

  • 4th July 2021 Open Day Bird Sightings

    OPEN DAY 4TH JULY 2021
    West End – Car Park:- Blackbird, Blackcap, Reed Bunting, Common Buzzard, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Cormorant, Carrion Crow, Mandarin Duck, Mallard Duck, Little Egret, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Greylag Goose, Great Crested Grebe, Black-headed Gull, Herring Gull, Grey Heron, Kingfisher, Linnett, Magpie,  Nuthatch, Robin, Barn Swallow, Mute Swan, Common Tern, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Marsh Tit, Pied Wagtail, Reed Warbler, Whitethroat, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Woodpigeon.

    West End:-  1 Little Egret, 1 Kingfisher, up to 25 Lapwing, Reed Warbler singing in front of the hide. Terns are still nesting on the rafts, several Great Crested Grebe nests.
    Whillet’s: – Yellowhammer heard, Good numbers of Peacock butterfly caterpillars and ladybird pupae.
