WeirWood from 8:00hrs was completely shrouded in thick fog. So I decided to walk the north bank. Well worth the effort with Marsh Tit, several Chiffchaffs, Reed Bunting, 4 Jays making quite a din and Great spotted Woodpecker. A nice Lesser Whitethroat was around the picnic site plus to my delight a Lesser spotted Woodpecker seen here mid level in the trees for some 5 minutes around 8:30hrs. A nice find and my first for a while, picked up calling. A Green Woodpecker rounded off a nice trio plus a Spotted Flycatcher in the field near the Admirals Bridge Road. On my return it was still very misty but in the c/pk a Goldcrest and 2 Coal Tits were added to the tally. Much better than yesterday’s efforts.

At the west end 10 Lapwings, Green Sandpiper, 4 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, Shoveller, Little Grebe, 11 Great-crested Grebes and several Chiffchaffs noted. At 7:45hrs an Osprey flew over the c/pk headed south east. 2 Snipe eventually emerged from under the heronry plus a Common Sandpiper. The highlight of the day so far was the 2 Spoonbills that flew over headed south west at 8:02hrs. A Kingfisher put in a brief fly by appearance as did 4 Stock Doves. A Red Kite flew over, not seen one for a few days. At Whillett’s a Sedge Warbler again plus more Chiffchaffs and 2 Greenfinches. A Water Rail was squealing here too, nice to know they’re around. Not a bad day by comparison to recent quiet visits. At the dam 74 Black-headed Gulls, a Common Sandpiper on the dam, plus 2 Herring Gulls along the north shore and 15 Great-crested Grebes scattered about. It clouded over by 8:30hrs but it didn’t improve anything here. Generally very quiet. I left soon after happy though.
